How are you going to celebrate Independence Day? Take in a ball game? Picnic with the family and watch the fireworks?
Me, I wonder what it must have been like to live 234 years ago.
More precisely, July 5th.
How would colonists be feeling the day after winning Independence? The victors imagined future possibilities sans the yoke of Merry Old England defining their world, while the Loyalists resigned themselves to living in a meritocracy, stripped of their entitlements. In short, it was equal parts euphoria mixed with sheer terror.
Now think about this for a minute. Without the benefit of modern communications or a government, the help of a Navy or Army, a rag tag bunch of farmers had defeated England - the most powerful nation on earth. Today that would only happen in a Hollywood movie.
Yet on July 5th 1776, America represented what was possible, given only will and desire.
Of course, failure was not an option NOT when you're facing life in prison or the hang man's noose for treason. Can you say out of your comfort zone!
The spirit of those men and women defined us then and live with us always. They bravely created a new world because they believed in our future.
Amen for that.
